Making climates comfortable, maximizing veterinary care: a deep-energy retrofit for a world-class animal hospital
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals–Angell in Jamaica Plain is home to world-class veterinary professionals, top-notch equipment, 24-hour emergency care, and cutting-edge research. GreenerU helped the MSPCA improve its buildings’ comfort and efficiency through a deep energy retrofit so staff could stay focused on their mission: kindness and care for animals.
The Angell location of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) in Jamaica Plain is housed in three connected buildings from different eras: the 1950s, 1970s, and 2000s. The buildings’ insulation and heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in its older buildings were badly in need of repair or replacement.
GreenerU leveraged more than $540,000 in utility incentives to help the MSPCA achieve energy-efficient, comfortable work environs for its people and patients.
GreenerU first helped MSPCA understand a range of options to address its failing heating systems. Ultimately, GreenerU delivered and implemented a comprehensive modernization of the HVAC systems, along with a package of energy-efficiency measures. The complex now has a 21st-century HVAC system. Leaky, single-pane windows have been replaced with insulated windows, resulting in more comfortable spaces. Facilities management has greater control and diagnostics capability, lighting has been dramatically improved, and the buildings’ energy and maintenance costs have been significantly reduced.

Wasted hot water can result in high energy bills. Installed water conservation measures can help reduce energy use.
Contracting with GreenerU resulted in the most complete and cost-effective way to future-proof the MSPCA against ever rising energy costs. Their work spanned an array of improvements at the MSPCA, from new windows and lighting, electrical, and heating and air conditioning. GreenerU worked with their in-house team and seamlessly managed any needed sub-contracts with third parties. This made the management of the project from the MSPCA-Angell’s perspective much easier and provided maximum visibility into costs. GreenerU was flexible, responsive, and in tune with our needs.
